Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg stands for
openness, tolerance and against xenophobia

[translated from German] The numerous crises in the world, war, violence and widespread human suffering as well as challenges such as climate change, migration and economic anxiety are creating deep uncertainty. This leads to social debates, some of which are anti-democratic. Against the backdrop of right-wing extremist, anti-democratic endeavors that have become public, MLU expresses its deep concern for the freedom of research and teaching in the international and diverse community of its researchers, teachers and students. Conscious of its own history in the dictatorships of the 20th century, MLU opposes xenophobia and nationalism.
Science thrives on exchange with others. As a "weltoffene Hochschule" (university for openness), MLU is a place of encounter, critical debate and learning because it brings together people with different cultural, ethnic, religious and social backgrounds and perspectives. Respectful interaction with one another is the basis for reaching solutions in open discussions and objective debates. Peaceful coexistence requires openness, a willingness to engage in discourse and global understanding. The university and its members are committed to these essential values - in their studies, teaching and research as well as in their day-to-day work.
