Financing / Costs
Martin Luther University does not charge tuition fees. However, students can anticipate monthly living costs of approx. 550 € (365GBP / 660USD – as of June2005). This sum includes the cost of rent, food, books, transportation, and health insurance.
In Germany, there are different scholarship organizations, which offer scholarships. However, as a rule, full financial support for the entire duration of study is not awarded at the beginning of the first year. The German Academic Exchange Office (Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst: www.daad.de) is the biggest scholarship organization for foreign students. It offers a number of programmes. They award scholarships which are dependent upon a student’s country of origin and field of study, and only to students studying in later semesters or to postgraduates.
Foreign students have the right to work 90 whole days or 180 half days in the year. It is possible for students who hold an additional job at the university to work without a time restriction. Nevertheless, this is usually not sufficient to finance the majority of one’s studies. It should also be noted, that on account of the high unemployment rate in Germany, it is not always easy to find a job.
