Regualations for Residence
Pupils, doctoral candidates and guest scientists from many countries, require a visa before entering Germany. This does not include the countries of the EU (European Union) and some other countries, with which Germany has visa-free traffic agreements.
Information about whether a visa application is required, and how to obtain one, can be found on the German Embassy and Foreign Office website.
For stays of more than three months, one must apply for a “permission to stay” form (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung), from the local Office of Foreign Authority (Ausländerbehörde). The office can be reached as follows:

To avoid long waiting periods, foreign guest scientists and doctoral candidates can make an appointment at the Office of Foreign Authority, by telephone (0345 / 221 5310).
