Deadline extended: Registration for the German language courses for international doctoral candidates and postdocs in the summer term 2018 open now!

We are glad that in the upcoming summer term 2018 we will again be able to offer five German language courses from level A1 to level C1.

Deadline extended: Registration is possible until March 15th, 2018. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Call for applications: PhD Finalisation Grants and Teaching/Research Assistantships 2018 (deadline: 15 January 2018)

PhD Finalisation Grants have the objective of ensuring that international doctoral candidates who are suffering hardships through no fault of their own can complete their PhDs within the given timeframe. The grant is 400 € per month for a period of up to 6 months. Find out more here.

  • Grants for female candidates are also available from the Rectorate for Structure and Strategic Development, with 20 January as the deadline. See here for details.

Students with a Teaching or Research Assistantship (TA/RAs) support research or teaching by providing courses for students, supervision of student projects, by collecting and analyzing data or preparing publications and conference contributions. Assistantships may help to partially cover the living costs of the doctoral candidates. Find out more here.

Language Tandem Program

02.10.2012: We warmly invite all students, PhD students, postdocs and their partners to participate in our Language Tandem Program in the winter semester. Within our program, we do not only offer the opportunity to find a tandem partner. We also support the tandem teams with three further meetings during the course of the semester. Participation in our program is free! The tandem events are held in German and English. Further information on application and events can be found in our flyer. If you miss participating in the first event, you can join in later (for the third meeting on December 4, 2012 at the latest).

New Graduate School: ANARCHIE

02.10.2012: A new graduate school will be launched on 15 October: the International Max Planck Research School for the Anthropology, Archaeology and History of Eurasia (IMPRS ANARCHIE), a cooperation between the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology and the Martin-Luther-University.

Canoe Tour and PhD-Barbecue on July 21

Dear PhD students and Post Docs!
For the fourth year in a row, we would like to invite you to join us on a discovery of the beauty of the river Saale and its shores in a Canadian canoe. Afterwards we will have a barbecue at the Peißnitzhaus and close the semester together. Your families and friends are also most welcome to join us!

Brocken tour on June 23

Dear PhD students and Post Docs!
On Saturday, June 6, 2012 we are going to climb the highest mountain of Saxony-Anhalt.
The Brocken is 1141 meter high and located in the national park Harz. The hiking tour is about 12 km long, lasts approx. 4 hours and leads us through a very attractive landscape with breathtaking panoramic views. All in all we will have to climb an altitude difference of 850 meters. Therefore, it is very important to wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothes.
On the way back we will use the unique “Harzer Schmalspurbahn” (narrow-gauge railway) to get from Schierke to Wernigerode. On the way we will have a picnic together.

When: Saturday, June 23, 2012
Meeting point: 7.45 a.m., Reisezentrum at the main entrance of the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) in Halle (Saale)
Participation fee: 15,- € (inkl. Hin- und Rückfahrt, Fahrt mit Harzer Schmalspurbahn, Essen)

Visit of the Leipzig Zoo on May 12, 2012

03.05.2012: On our visit to the Leipzig Zoo, we will discover a fascinating wilderness in the middle of the Saxon city. We will experience at least some of the nearly 850 animal species and subspecies living in habitats created to closely mimic their natural ones, within six exciting theme worlds, e.g. the primate habitat “Pongoland” and “Gondwanaland”, a fascinating tropical experience world.
